Ozeri Pronto kitchen scale review: weigh it and the dough stops surprising you

Fine resolution, a tare button and enough range for a whole batch in one bowl. That is everything dough asks of a scale, and both Prontos sold under this name clear it.
What it is
A flat electronic kitchen scale, 20.8 × 15.2 × 4.6 cm, with a tare button, a six-unit converter (g, kg, ml, oz, lb, lb:oz) and a backlit LCD, running on two AAA cells.
One thing is worth saying plainly, because no other page will say it. Ozeri has sold two different Prontos under this name. The original is published as a 5,100 g scale reading in 1 g steps; the later "Variable Graduation" Pronto is published as 0.5–6,000 g, reading in 0.1 g steps below 1,000 g and 0.5 g steps above it. Ozeri's own page for this ASIN still describes the first; the retail listing it points at is now titled as the second. We cannot tell you from published sources which one will arrive in the box, so this review does not rest on a figure we cannot stand behind.
It does not need to. For dough, a scale needs exactly three things: resolution of 1 g or finer, a tare button, and enough range to hold a whole batch in one bowl. Both Prontos clear all three comfortably, and the rest of the market's differentiation — glass platforms, app connectivity, nutrition databases — touches none of them.
What it changes
It converts dough from a recipe you follow into arithmetic you control.
Every formula on this site is written in baker's percentages: water, salt, yeast and oil all expressed against the flour weight. That system only works if the flour weight is a real number. Measured by volume it is not — a cup of flour runs from roughly 120 g to 160 g depending on whether it was scooped from the bag, spooned in, or shaken level. Carry that spread into a 65% hydration formula and the dough that actually lands in your bowl is somewhere between about 50% and 75% hydration. At the low end you get a dough that will not stretch; at the high end, one that sticks to everything. Both look like technique problems and neither is.
Yeast is the other place the number matters. A gram either way is the difference between a dough that is ready in the morning and one that has not risen — or one that overshot overnight. Any 1 g scale reads a 3 g dose honestly. For the 0.1–0.15% doses a long cold ferment wants, either scale the batch up until the weight lands somewhere the display can resolve, or keep a small jeweller's scale for that one ingredient.
Tare is what makes it quick rather than fussy. Bowl on, zero, flour in, zero, water in, zero, salt in. One container, no measuring jugs, nothing extra to wash. Set the targets with the dough calculator and you can build a Detroit classic or a classic margherita dough in about ninety seconds of actual work.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you already own any scale that reads to 1 g. Nothing here reads more truthfully than that, and a second one on the worktop is just a second thing to find batteries for.
Skip it also if you want one scale for the whole kitchen. This is a kitchen-scale range in both generations, and neither will take a loaded roasting tin; a 10 kg-capacity scale with the same resolution is the more general purchase. And if your real interest is micro-dosing yeast and salt for single balls, this is the wrong instrument class entirely — buy a 0.01 g pocket scale and keep it for that job alone.
